The Womxn Project was proud to join thousands of activists from across the country on Wednesday in front of the United States Supreme Court for a demonstration as part of the oral arguments in June Medical Services v. Russo, a critical case concerning abortion access.
It was a truly amazing day. We were proud to show up 50 strong to make it clear that in Rhode Island we defend our rights!
UpriseRI featured a great piece by reporter Alexis Rapoza on The Womxn Project’s delegation. You can check it out HERE. You can also see videos and pictures from this historic day at #MyRightMyDecision.
Our trip to Washington, DC included briefings and strategy meetings with the Center for Reproductive Rights (CRR), the organization leading the lawsuit challenging the harmful LA law that was up for debate, and the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC). We attended a fundraiser with Advocates for Youth to raise money to support the New Orleans Abortion Fund.
We also met with Senators Whitehouse and Reed where we got to thank Senator Jack Reed for signing on to the Women’s Health Protection Act, a federal bill that would get rid of restrictions designed to close clinics and take away access to abortion care.
The CRR staff and Senator Reed’s office made it very clear that the many meetings we held and the calls and emails that The Womxn Project and our activists generated made the difference in getting Senator Reed to support this critical bill. We are so grateful to each person who attended a meeting or reached out to leverage our collective power. We are making a difference together….let’s keep it up!
While Rhode Islanders traveled to DC to make our voices heard, activists also came together to speak out for positive change back at home.
“Eliminating barriers will provide individuals the freedom to make their own choices about their health care, their lives and their families.” Rep. Liana Cassar sponsor of the HB7618, “Equality in Abortion Coverage Act”, a bill to get rid of bans on health coverage for abortion.
Check out video from UpriseRI from the #Repro4RI4all lobby day at the State House organized by the Rhode Island Coalition for Reproductive Freedom. We were proud to co-sponsor this exciting event.
“Abortion is basic health care and should be covered by your health insurance no matter how much money you make or where you work.” Sen. Bridget Valverde, sponsor of SB 2476 “Equality in Abortion Coverage Act”. You can see her full speech on UpriseRI.
We are grateful to work with Rep. Cassar, Sen. Valverde and 19 senate sponsors and 26 House sponsors along with our partners to advance this important legislation.
We are so proud and thankful for the commitment of activists across the state who continue to work with us to push for real and lasting change.
Together, we have built a movement of our families and for our families. We had five families travel with us on our trip to Washington DC. We have people show up at the State House with their moms and sisters, their cousins and best friends. We know that the work we do is about our health, our dignity and our liberation!
We are not going away and we will not be silenced. We are in this together and we will continue to make a difference!
