TWP began in 2017, when five Rhode Island womxn came together with a shared determination: to preserve access to safe and legal abortion within their state.
Recognizing that traditional advocacy alone would not be enough to galvanize communities at such a critical moment, the founders drew on their backgrounds in the arts and grassroots organizing to build a movement rooted in creativity, courage, and connection. Through the fusion of art and activism, Artivism, TWP helped secure one of the most significant victories for reproductive rights in Rhode Island’s history: the passage of the Reproductive Privacy Act.
After this landmark success, the founders continued to lobbying efforts in Rhode Island, working to pass several influential bills to protect Bodily Freedom for Rhode Island's residents. Learn more about our current and upcoming policy work.
After the initial success of the Reproductive Privacy Act, the founders recognized the need to sustain, and expand, their work beyond legislative wins. That vision gave birth to our sibling org, the Womxn Project Education Fund, a nonprofit dedicated to civic engagement, public education, and ongoing artivism that continues to nurture a statewide movement for reproductive freedom, gender equity, and LGBT+ rights.
Moving forward in the current political climate, TWP and TWPEF will collaborate to build a stronger community movement which will lead to more success at the RI State House. Through community learning around seeing oneself as an art activist, and then learning how to lobby and use creative methods to engage in one’s government, the organization will continue our efforts into 2026. We will defend laws passed thus far and continue to push for civil rights, with a focus on reproductive rights and LGBTQ+ protections, through a louder call for transparency in government and protecting the basic human right to voting access.
