TWP is proud of the work we do to change laws in Rhode Island with a focus on reproductive rights and gender equity, but passing legislation is only half the battle. We put time and energy into government transparency because these important topics can be modified or overturned without clarity of process, procedures, and democratic methodology.
We know that Rhode Islanders want to know if those interpreting laws and creating school policies support ALL Rhode Islanders. That's why we created the Bodily Freedom Forever Index (BFFI) and call out municipal government meetings that can have a state level impact.
The BFFI is an ongoing initiative to record and report the stance of each elected official in Rhode Island on issues surrounding reproductive freedom, gender equity, and LGBTQ+ rights in Rhode Island.
TWP defines "bodily freedom" as sole decision-making power over one's body, so long as those decisions do not infringe on another’s bodily autonomy. When evaluating an official's stance on bodily freedom, TWP considers two issues: support for reproductive rights and support for LGBTQ+ rights.
We are aggregating this data to ensure that voters have accurate and transparent information around these key issues. We will report on our website whether an official is “For”, “Against”, or “Refused to Answer” in support of bodily freedom.
This group of volunteers across the state mobilize to attend (and speak at, if necessary) local municipal meeting–school committee meetings, judicial nominating hearings, and meetings of the Rhode Island Interscholastic League.
Their goal is to alert our community to potential or current threats to bodily freedom and opportunities to support students and educators. They also quietly make TWP's presence known so decision-makers know they are being monitored.
