Nearly 200 activists lined up outside a Federal Hill restaurant in Providence, imploring Senate President Dominick J. Ruggerio to take action to protect the rights of Rhode Island women to choose an abortion.

PROVIDENCE — Nearly 200 abortion rights activists made a lot of noise Thursday night outside a Federal Hill restaurant where Senate President Dominick J. Ruggerio was attending a Democratic fundraiser.

Organized by the Womxn Project, the rally urged Democratic leaders to take action this year to protect the rights of Rhode Island women to choose an abortion.

Ruggerio was probably already inside Maria’s Cucina at 477 Broadway before the protest started. A car bearing a Senate plate with the number 1 was parked in the lot as the crowd lined the street on both sides of the driveway.

About 20 Brown medical students in white coats were from the local chapter of Medical Students for Choice. Four women stood silently in red robes and white wimple-like hats next to a fifth woman holding a sign: “The Handmaids are messengers from the future where the U.S. is ruled by a fundamental regime & women are the property of the state. DO NOT LET THIS HAPPEN.”
