‘Codify’ by Tammy Brown
The battle for women’s reproductive rights has raged for decades. While the landmark Roe vs Wade Supreme Court decision, and subsequent decisions by the Court, have served to protect a woman’s right to chose in the legal and constitutional realm, the cultural and philosophical battle rages on. There is something fundamental, something deeply emotional about the debate surrounding reproductive rights that strikes at how we see ourselves as women. Are we independent human beings with our own sense of autonomy and self-determination, or are we nothing more than vessels designed to birth and nurture the next generation?
Through “Codify” the goal is to get back to basics. We will focus on the fundamental aspects of this issue from a legislative standpoint, while stripping away (both literally and figuratively) the emotional. Nearly two dozen women, of varying ages and backgrounds, will simply read aloud sections of the Roe v Wade decision juxtaposed with sections of the Reproductive Health Care Act. There is a power in saying things out loud. And because visual messages have power as well, many of the women have agreed to perform the reading in a nearly “nude” state (wearing only nude bodysuits or undergarments) to emphasize the fact that women’s bodies are the true subject of this debate. Our hope is that through the reading we can break through some of the intractable chatter about reproductive rights and move forward to codify those rights into law in Rhode Island.
This is a kid friendly event and more performers are welcome.

Petition 2.0, A Community Quilt Supporting the passage of RHCA
The Quilt Petition is designed as a collaboration of residents from around the state, where constituents can and have signed / decorate a square in support of The Reproductive Health Care Act. The squares are sewn together to create panels for a quilt, that continue to grow in size as we have acquired more signatures. The Quilt will be displayed in the RI Statehouse from the third floor during the 2018 legislative session. The Quilt will continue into 2019.
