As 2020 comes to a close we’re left asking, how do we make sense of this year like no other? We turned to Rhode Island artists for help answering this question, and 35 generously shared their work with us.
When 2020 began, the Democratic presidential primary field was wide open, President Donald Trump had recently been impeached by the U.S. House, and news of a “novel coronavirus” was coming from Wuhan, China.
Within months, “quarantining” and “social distancing” became part of our vocabulary. We learned to track the grim daily numbers of deaths and infections. Some of us lost our jobs, and all of us became more familiar with the inside of our own homes.
In late spring and through the summer, our world was rocked again by massive protests for racial justice. Unprecedented hurricane and wildfire seasons underscored the growing threat posed by climate change.
And in November, record numbers of voters cast ballots in a bitter and polarized election that the outgoing president has yet to formally concede.
