Voters in Rhode Island face several crucial decisions this fall. But voting on Question 1– whether or not to hold a constitutional convention–has a clear answer: NO.
Why? Because we believe it poses a severe threat to hard-won rights like abortion access.
What the heck is a constitutional convention? The constitutional convention is a gathering of elected delegates with the power to propose changes to the state constitution.
So what? It means essential rights, including access to reproductive healthcare, would be at risk of being rolled back.
But wait, it gets worse: the process is vulnerable to influence by special interest groups and dark money, meaning unlimited funds can be used in campaigns aimed at stripping away hard-won protections.
This means the voices of Rhode Islanders could be drowned out by powerful outside forces–and we can’t let that happen.
If you think we’ve seen this before, you’re right. In 1986, the last convention brought damaging proposals forward, including efforts to restrict reproductive rights. We cannot afford to put our rights on the line again.
