PROVIDENCE – May 6 – The Womxn Project is thrilled with the Rhode Island Senate passage of the Health Care Provider Shield Act. The bill, which passed overwhelmingly by a vote of 29 to 7, will protect doctors, medical care providers, and patients from other states’ laws that could prevent medical professionals from providing patients with necessary abortion and gender affirming care.
Multiple states have recently passed draconian restrictions on abortion and transgender health care, with some going so far as to intimidate medical professionals in other states who provide abortion and gender affirming care to their patients. Many other states in the nation have passed provider shield acts.
Jocelyn Foye, executive director of The Womxn Project says of the bill’s passage, “As other states across the nation work to restrict people’s access to necessary medical care, I am proud to live in a state that recognizes the importance of folks’ bodily autonomy when it comes to making their healthcare decisions. Protecting medical professionals’ ability to provide proper care shows faith in their medical knowledge and recognizes the unique and trusting relationship between a physician and their patient.”
