Protecting Students' Rights

The RI Department of Education has a policy that requires and ensures all students are protected from discrimination, harassment, and retaliation on the basis of gender identity or sexual orientation. It affirms the rights of LGBT+ students in Rhode Island schools, helping to create safer, more inclusive learning environments statewide.

The Womxn Project is continually monitoring school districts to ensure compliance of this policy, and rallies the public to push back when students' rights and the enforcement of this policy are threatened. What does the Student Protection Policy do?

Institutes a state-wide anti-bullying policy
Requires the parents of both agressors and survivors of bullying be notified of displinary and preventative actions being taken by the school
Requires districts to provide referrals for counseling services to both aggressors and survivors
Requires schools to take action to address instances of bullying, including meaningful action to restore saftey for the survivor
Reinforces districts' commitments to honor a student's chosen pronouns while at school
