What will these bills do?

H-7360/S-2045: “This act would protect people attending Rhode Island court proceedings from civil arrest without a judicial warrant, ensures court access, sets enforcement rules, and provides remedies for violations.”
H-7211: “This act would bar law enforcement from wearing masks or disguises when interacting with the public, require visible ID, allow limited safety and undercover exceptions, and impose criminal penalties and civil liability for violations.”
H-7202: “This act would create a Rhode Island civil cause of action allowing individuals to sue persons acting under color of federal law for violations of Federal Constitutional rights committed under color of federal law.”

why do we need them?

Over the past year and a half, we have seen it become the norm for federal law enforcement agents to wear facial coverings when interacting with the public, making them difficult to identify and hold accountable when they overstep.
We have also repeatedly seen law enforcement agents stand outside our courts, intimidating and arresting people, particularly immigrants, who are trying to attend their court proceedings.
Without this legislation, these officers will not only continue to escape accountability, but will also continue to engage in behaviors that many of us consider to be civil rights violations.
In order to keep our courts and communities safe for all demographics, these bills must pass.
