[Providence, RI]– On Tax Day, April 15 at 9am over a live Zoom presentation, The Womxn Project will hold a press conference with Congressman Magaziner and Nina Harrison from the Economic Progress Institute in response to last week’s passage of the federal budget resolution in Washington, DC, that includes trillions in tax breaks for the richest households, paid for by taking healthcare and food assistance from thousands of Rhode Island residents.
We will hear from Congressman Magaziner on important issues he is hearing and seeing in Congress as well as what Rhode Islanders can do about it.
The Womxn Project’s Jocelyn Foye will release a new report that details the increase in state billionaire wealth since passage of the Trump tax law in 2017 and the impact of the current federal budget resolution’s proposal to cut $880 billion from healthcare as well as make record cuts to the SNAP food assistance program, impacting bodily freedom for all Rhode Islanders.
The Economic Progress Institute will speak to a day of action they are leading in collaboration with the Revenue for Rhode Island Coalition around passing a bill that would prioritize the well-being of more than one million Rhode Islanders over the continued benefit of about 5,700 tax filers — the top 1% of Rhode Islanders — by creating a 3% surtax on income above $625,000 (after all deductions). It would generate $190 million in annual revenue and would not touch the first $625,000 in income.
Large cuts to Medicaid, the largest source of federal funding to states, will have dire consequences for the state budget, jobs and significantly reduce economic growth over the coming years. Let’s work together to not Rhode Island or Governor McKee give that security and safety away.
