Despite attempts by the leadership to avoid a “divisive” debate on abortion, the General Assembly may not be able to evade the issue in 2019.
Since the election of President Donald J. Trump, two Providence Democrats, state Rep. Edith Ajello and state Sen. Gayle Goldin, have twice introduced legislation to codify existing abortion rights in state law, in case the landmark Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade should be overturned.
