The Womxn Project 2020 Art Competition

The Womxn Project is ready to take on the next legislative agenda item,
and we want your help to blaze the trail ahead!

Call for artists – see below.  We need your ARTivist creativity!

In the 11th hour of the 2019 legislatively session, Rhode Island passed the Reproductive Privacy Act, which protects the right to abortion here in our state even if Trump’s anti-abortion judges overturn or undermine Roe v. Wade.

Over the last 3 years, The Womxn Project went from a “project” to a “movement,” and that movement has generated a momentum that asks us all to turn an eye to what Rhode Island could (and should) be:  a place where all womxn can access the reproductive healthcare they need with ease and dignity.

Informed by input from volunteers and social media followers, the TWP board has decided for our next state-wide goal to take on the harms of policies that deny health coverage for abortion.

The federal Hyde Amendment has withheld abortion coverage for more than 40 years and we have a policy just like this one in our state – it takes away health benefits from state employees and people who use Medicaid if they need an abortion.  Doing this work will allow our state’s most vulnerable folx, low-income people who use Medicaid to be able to afford care, as well as those who work for the government, to access the reproductive health care they so deserve.  For more info on the Hyde Amendment, we encourage you to check out this informative and hilarious video: https://youtu.be/5rDN2tpRxCw

SO WE ARE TAKING ON A BIG, BOLD CAMPAIGN – WE NEED YOUR HELP TO HAVE A BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL TSHIRT AND SWAG TO GO WITH IT!

CONTEST/CALL FOR ARTISTS
We at TWP believe in the power of artivism (art + activism.) We know art to be a force that can bring forth major change in society as it can share perspectives that can touch people’s hearts. That is why we are excited to invite artists of any age and skill level to submit work to our t-shirt design contest.

HOW IT WILL WORK
We’ll be taking submissions from now until midnight on November 15th, 2019. Shortly thereafter, the TWP board of directors will pick their top favorites from the submissions, and those selected works will be shared on our social media feeds. We’ll hold a public vote on our Facebook page to pick at least two designs to be printed on t-shirts and other swag to come out swinging for the start of RI’s January 2020 legislative session. The artists of the chosen designs will receive an honorarium for their work of $250. Please send your drawing/image in a low resolution file along with your contact information to [email protected] by November 15th.

NOT AN ARTIST, BUT WANNA’ HELP?
Cool! (Thanks!) Here’s some ways to pitch in:  find our posts explaining the contest on social and post some design ideas in the comment sections to inspire artists;  share the contest on your feed so more folx see it; mention it to artistic friends you know; and/or, suggest to young people that they try submitting something for the contest!

What specs do we need to say about the art submissions?

  • 5×7 150 dpi
  • 2 colors max
  • Single design (no back design or sleeve designs)
  • What color shirt do you envision?

The Reproductive Privacy Act essentially has given Rhode Islanders reassurance that the right to safe and legal abortion will be protected, but we still need to close the gaps in access. Join us!
